White Dew(白露), calledBailu, is thefifteenthsolar term in the Chinese lunar calendar. It arrives in early September, when the days grow shorter and the early morning air feels cool and gentle. If you walk in the countryside at sunrise, you may see silver-whitedewcovering the grass and rice plants, sparkling in the light.
Bailu marks the real arrival of autumn in many places. Watermelons and cucumbers disappear from local markets, replaced by freshlotus roots, pumpkins, and new-season peanuts. In the fields, farmers hurry to bring in corn and rice before colder weather slows down the harvest.
People across China like to adjust their routines during Bailu. It’s common to go for morning walks and enjoy the crisp, quiet air. Parents remind children to start wearing thinjacketsat night, as the temperature drops sharply after sunset. In southern China, people stew duck withtaroor cook millet porridge, believing these foods help the body adapt to cooler days.
A well-loved tradition is to admire the white dew on leaves and appreciate the peacefulness of the season. Some families also write seasonal poetry or hang up fragrant sachets to keep away autumn illnesses. Bailu is a gentle invitation to slow down, enjoy the comfort of home, and prepare for the golden sights of full autumn.
白露是中国农历中的第十五个节气，出现在九月上旬。这个时候白天变短，清晨的空气显得凉爽柔和。清晨在乡间散步，常常能看到草地和稻田上覆盖着银白色的露水，在阳光下晶莹闪烁。
白露标志着很多地区真正进入秋天。西瓜和黄瓜逐渐离开市场，新鲜的莲藕、南瓜和新花生开始上市。田间，农民们忙着在天气更冷之前收割玉米和水稻。
