Minor Heat (Xiaoshu) – The Approach of Hottest Days

Minor Heat(小暑) is theeleventhsolar term in the Chinese lunar calendar, usually arriving around July 7th. This period marks the beginning of truly hot weather, although it is not yet the hottest time of the year. The days become very bright, and the temperature continues to rise.

During Minor Heat, farmers must keep an eye on their crops, as strongsunlightand frequentrainfallcan both help and harm the fields. The high temperature encourages fast growth of rice, corn, and vegetables, but it can also increase the risk ofdiseaseor insect attacks.

Different places in China celebrate this time with special food and habits. In many areas, people enjoy eating coldwatermelonand drinking herbalteato cool down. In southern China, families may cook dishes withmung beansbecause they are believed to keep the body refreshed and prevent summer illnesses.

Minor Heat is an important reminder to stay healthy when the weather is hot. People try to take a nap at noon, stay out of the sun, and drink enough water. As the sun shines and rain falls, it is also a time to admire the lush scenery that flourishes everywhere.
