two times 是 “两次”，那“two-time”是多少次？

大家在学英语的时候会发现，有很多短语或词组是不能凭借其表面意思去判断整个句子的含义，它们大多数情况下是有其引申意思的。今天我们就来介绍这么一组词！

比如说上学时期，老师一定讲解过“一次、;两次、三次”的说法，once=一次、twice=两次……，一般表示次数，就是 数字+ times，如three times、four times……,但有个词跟这个表达方式很类似，意思却完全不同，那就是“two-time”。

很多人在第一眼看到“two-time”，会下意识地理解为“两次”!那two-time 真的是 “两次”吗?其实不然。

two-time

two-time是一个动词词组，正确意思是“ 脚踏两只船;欺骗;出卖;爱情上对…不忠 ”。

英文释义：to deceive someone you are having a relationship with by having a secret sexual relationship with someone else at the same time对伴侣不忠，与另一个人有秘密的性关系

有一种说法是two-time是to have two at a time（一次和两个人）演变而来的，常用于非正式场合中。

例：I ended the relationship when I found out he was two-timing me.当我发现他脚踏两条船时，就分手了。

它的名词形式“对爱情不忠者，脚踏两条船者”是two-timer

the third degree

这也是一个口语中的非正式用法，third是第三，degree有“程度”的意思，但是the third degree并不是第三度，而是

asking serious questions and/or giving someone rough treatment to get information问一些严肃的问题或者粗暴地对待某人来获取信息;严厉盘问;逼供;刑讯

有说法说这个词是源自刑事司法法典里描述不同程度的谋杀时所用的词汇，也有说是源自共济会（是一个全由男性组成的团体），他们举行奢华的秘密仪式，其成员要想成为第三等级会员或石匠大师，必须接受严格的质询。

例：I got the third degree when I got home last night.昨晚我回家时被家人严加盘问。

the eleventh hour

字面上看是“第十一个小时”，但是它其实并不是简单的这个含义。这个词组源自《圣经》：“And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour they received every man a denarius.（那些第十一个小时雇来的人和其他别的时间雇来的人的工钱是一样的）” 这句话的意思是，有些很早就雇来做工的工人和最后快结束了时雇来的工人的结工资是一样的。后来the eleventh hour就变成了“最后时刻，刚好来得及的时刻”。

它的英文解释是the last moment or almost too late最后一刻，最后时刻

例：We only received the signatures at the eleventh hour.我们在最后一刻才收到签字。
