Yushui(雨水), meaning “Rain Water,” is thesecondsolar term in the Chinese lunar calendar. It usually comes in late February and marks the beginning of more frequentrainfall. While the cold of winter still lingers, the air gradually becomes softer, and every drop of rain brings the promise of a new season.
The most noticeable change during Yushui is the increase in rain. Fields, gardens, and rivers start to feel more lively. Farmers welcome this time because enough water in early spring is vital for seeds tosproutand for young plants to grow strong. People often say, “Spring rain is as precious as oil,” to show how important rain is for the year’s crops.
Family life during Yushui also adapts to the wetter weather. Many people clean theirhomesto prevent dampness and illnesses. Parents remind children to wear raincoats or carryumbrellaswhen going outside. In some places, there is a tradition of eating dishes like “spring vegetables soup” to refresh the body and stay healthy.
With the coming rain, people look for the signs of spring: fresh green buds on trees, the sound of frogs near ponds, and the first appearance of earthworms in the soil. Yushui teaches everyone to be patient, as change sometimes starts quietly, with soft showers and gentle growth.
